Living Jazz Fridays at Noon featuring Bill Mays

Posted on September 10, 2021September 16, 2021 by Patricio Robayo

The first hour of this week’s “Living Jazz” show will feature a live interview with Bill Mays, one of our local piano jazz luminaries, who has played with Sarah Vaughan, Frank Sinatra and Phil Woods, among many others. We’ll catch up with Bill and listen to some of his recent music, notably a wonderful, long-forgotten concert with the L.A. pianist Mike Wofford. a recording of which was discovered and is now posted on Bill’s web site.

Bill, by the way, will be playing at the Deer Head Inn in Delaware Water Gap, Pa., on Oct. 1.
The rest of the show will be devoted to new releases. Out of England  we’ll hear the latest from the South London jazz collective Steam Down and the trumpeter Yazz Ahmed, who grew up in Bahrain and whose music reflects that heritage. From our own backyard, we’ll check out a new album by the twenty-something sax player Nicole Glover, who recently joined the all-female super group Artemis, as well as a truly wonderful new recording by the experimental chamber group 9 Horses that has been six years in the making.

“Living Jazz” airs Fridays from noon to 2 p.m. on WJFF, 90.5 F.M., and streams online at wjffradio.org.
