Stay Alert: Recognizing and Preventing Scams for Older Adults

Scams against older consumers are on the rise as more people have turned to online methods of communication and scammers have expanded their tactics.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s 2023 Elder Fraud Report, scams targeting adults over the age of 60 caused over $3.4 billion in losses in 2023, an increase of approximately 11% from the prior year. The average victim of elder fraud lost $33,915 due to these crimes.

June is World Elder Abuse Awareness Month and Patricio Robayo spoke to Lise-Anne Deoul, the Director of Sullivan County’s Office for the Aging about how scams targeting older adults and tips to avoid them.
