New Stretch of the Sullivan O&W Rail Trail Opens in South Fallsburg

Posted on August 21, 2024October 4, 2024 by Chia-Tien Nicole Chen

A new 1.1-mile trail has opened up in South Fallsburg, where visitors can wind around the partially collapsed Fallsburg Tunnel and take a scenic stop overlooking the Neversink River on a moderately hilly, unpaved path. It’s part of an ongoing project to transform stretches of abandoned railroad tracks throughout Sullivan County into the 50-mile-long, multiuse Sullivan O&W Trail that will connect communities throughout Sullivan and beyond.

Heather Jacksy, the director of Sullivan County’s planning department, spoke to Radio Catskill about the rail trail’s history, the new South Fallsburg segment, and her hopes that the rail trail may bring to the community a public place to exercise, a new pathway for travel, and even an economic boost.

I grew up in South Fallsburg when the O&W train ran thru the town . Later on in the 70’s I walked thru the tunnel and the tressle The town sent me a map bipassing the tunnel. It appears that the trail crosses over Lincoln Road the road ,I grew up on. Does it intersect at the top that meets with Tunnel Hill RD? We originally Knew it as Summit Hill Road before my father named it Lincoln RD. after Florida,s. LR. I suspect I will check it out myself .I grew up when Morty Michaels was the supervisor for 35 yrs. I am one of the Grossman Triplets .Most of the locals knew us.perhaps someone could senda drawing from the start of the bipass to the other end. Thank you.
