From Brownies to a Movement: How the New Paltz Free Food Fridge is Fighting Hunger and Building Community

Posted on June 26, 2025June 26, 2025 by Jamie

The founder and CEO of Millions of Butterflies began their journey during the pandemic— with small bake sales— to raise money for food justice causes. But what started as a simple gesture has since evolved into a full-scale community effort to fight hunger in Ulster County.

Todaro leads one of the area’s most impactful volunteer-driven initiatives. The New Paltz Free Food Fridge, created under the umbrella of Millions of Butterflies, provides free, fresh food to anyone in need—no questions asked. Stocked and kept-up by locals, the fridge has become a lifeline for many.

The organization has grown far beyond its bake sale beginnings. Live fundraising events at local bars, CSA shares with local farms, and a town that cares have transformed Millions of Butterflies into a multifaceted force for good. The mission is simple but powerful: ensure everyone has access to nourishing food, and build community along the way.

Todaro’s approach is hands-on, youthful, and deeply rooted in compassion. Under their leadership, the organization continues to expand—proving that even the smallest act of kindness can lead to lasting change.

Radio Catskill’s Jamie Case had the opportunity to talk to Todaro as they dove into the story behind the organization.
