Warming Centers Open for the Season in Sullivan County

Posted on November 18, 2025 by Tim Bruno

Monticello, N.Y. – Sullivan County’s warming centers in Liberty and Monticello will open Friday, Nov. 21, providing overnight shelter for anyone in need through mid-April 2026.

The centers are located at:

  • United Methodist Church, 170 North Main St., Liberty

  • St. John’s Episcopal Church, 15 St. John St., Monticello

Both will be open nightly from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.

“Despite our cold, sometimes snowy winters, having a warm, safe place to stay is not a universal experience here,” said John Liddle, Sullivan County Health & Human Services Commissioner. “The shortage of affordable and supportive housing, rising costs of living, and unexpected challenges continue to drive people to our warming centers. We welcome anyone who needs a place to stay for the night to come to either of these locations.”

Warming centers offer more than just shelter. Staff are trained to work with individuals who have complex and severe service needs. They also connect guests with medical care and social services.

“These locations offer people more than a place to sleep, and human service providers from across the County chip in to help those in need gain access to medical care and other social service benefits,” said District 5 Legislator Cat Scott, chair of the Legislature’s Health & Human Services Committee. “Warming centers also give the vulnerable a place where they can feel safe. The Liberty center is directly across the street from the Village of Liberty police station, and once again the Monticello center will provide onsite security.”

Deputy Social Services Commissioner Giselle Steketee praised local partners. “We’re very fortunate to have such strong community partners. The teams at the United Methodist Church, St. John’s Episcopal Church, and the Federation for the Homeless have been exceptionally reliable and supportive,” she said.

Sullivan County encourages anyone in need of warmth and safety to take advantage of these centers throughout the winter.

Please consider including the Port Jervis ‘Tri-State’ Warming Station in your coverage. Certainly within your listening area and an important service. Located at St. Peter’s Lutheran on Main Street in port Jervis. Open November 15 through March 15. Thanks in advance!
