Inmate Death in Wayne County’s USP Canaan Prison

Posted on July 28, 2025 by Kimberly Izar

An inmate, Brandon Sharpe, died on Sunday morning at a high security U.S. penitentiary in Waymart, Pennsylvania. He was 30 years old.

U.S. Department of Justice officials said that Sharpe was found unresponsive at USP Canaan at midnight on July 27. Employees initiated life-saving measures and had requested emergency medical services for Sharpe. He was transported by EMS to a local hospital and pronounced dead by hospital personnel, according to officials.

USP Canaan is a high-security federal men’s penitentiary with more than 1,370 inmates in Wayne County.

Sharpe had been in custody at USP Canaan since July 23 and was serving a 60-month sentence for Possession of a Machine Gun. The Federal Bureau of Investigation was notified, according to officials.

Radio Catskill reached out to USP Canaan on Monday. Public Information Officer Kristen Castrati said there was no additional information at the time.
